James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Ever get the perfect gift? That thing that you longed for hoped for and secretly thought you would never in a million years have? I did. The Evel Knievel motorcycle with the crank-up stand was the coolest gift I could imagine when I was 11. In all the commercials it showed Evel making spectacular jumps and pulling wheelies (even while he did a handstand on the handlebars!). It was everything a kid could want and when I got it for Christmas in 1975 I was over the moon.

Until I realized I couldn’t get him to do the wheelie handstand and he wiped out before getting to most of my homemade ramps. Mom was plenty steamed too when he rammed into the woodwork. By Valentine’s Day the gears were stripped out of the motor and Evel was toast. I was okay though because spring was coming and my baseball season was setting up to be awesome. I’m pretty sure Evel never made it to the summer.

Life’s changed a lot since I was 11 and it continues to change. The things I thought I wanted last year are forgotten (even if I got them) and I’m on to new ones. They say the world is changing all the time and like the weather if we don’t like it now we should just wait a bit and things will all be different. Thank God that our Father gives us what we need and furthermore, it’s perfect. That will never change.

What are the five most awesome gifts you’ve been given by God? I’ll bet they’re pretty cool (and won’t wear out by spring). If you’d like to share, I’d be interested to know.
