Good ‘ol Nebraska logic says you have to deserve whatever you get. Good thing Jesus was no Nebraskan. Romans 5: 6-8 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. I have to agree with Paul on this subject. Call it farmer logic but he’s right. It would be rare for someone to die for a righteous person. After all, they’re righteous, why would they need anyone else’s help, right? The good person, well if they were your child or someone you really loved, you might dare to die for them, maybe. His point isn’t so much however what we would do or consider in the whole “dying for someone else discussion” it’s what God did. It’s what Christ did. See, Christ’s timing was perfect. We were headed down the wrong path once again. God had to know it and it was clear the whole “wipe ‘em out with a flood and start over” thing hadn’t worked. No, it was time for something big; something that would actually show us how much he loved us. He would have to send his Son and actually have him die for us. It was a huge thing. It was the biggest thing ever and I’d like to think it made the point once and for all how much we mean to Him and how much He loves us. Still, I don’t know. Some of us, maybe many of us, are still about the same. Ungodly sinners headed down a wrong path, hell-bent (literally) for election as they say in the country. But in that fact, in that reality, exists the good news, the best news we could ever hope to spread as far and as often as possible. Christ, God’s Son, didn’t die for those that get it. He died for those that don’t and let’s be honest some of us that “get it” still have a long way to go. We can use all the help and grace we can get. So as you go out, doing what you do, how you do it and where, just remember; even though none of us are righteous (and who’d die for us if we were) that’s a good thing because in our powerlessness and at just the right time for us personally, we are saved. What kind of person sacrifices themselves for those that don’t deserve it? What kind of circumstance would it take for you to do this? I’d like to hear your ideas below.
