Having belief and knowledge and understanding are sometimes difficult for us. Thankfully we were given a gift that allows us to see and learn and grasp just what we are.
John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true–even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
We humans are a skeptical bunch in general. If we can’t see it then it just probably cannot be. Sometimes that serves us well. It keeps us from walking off cliffs and other random dangers where we realize that we’ll be harmed because there’s nothing there to support us. It also hinders us because we have trust issues. We think we see things that aren’t there or don’t see things that truly are and we suffer because of it. God realized that about us and sent his son.
It’s the things he said and the stuff he did that we can look at over 2,000 years later and say, “There’s my proof. I believe.” The Bible spends almost half its time telling us who Jesus was so we can understand and know the truth. Because he was human, one of us, what he taught is real. We don’t personally know him but his story, his body of work, are evident. Even the end of his life here on earth and his return after death becomes more than some story. It is a part of us just as we are a part of him as John writes.
Today, take time to grasp the fact that God became flesh and Jesus walked among us. We are a part of him in the same way we’re a part of those we love and love us in return. We are part of this and so a part of the truth. God has done this for us. And it is all so we can understand. Here’s hoping that we get it.
When was the last time you truly “went to the mat” to get the truth across to someone? What did you sacrifice? What did you risk so that they understood? My guess is it wasn’t a life. Consider this. How valuable are you to God that he not only risked but knew the cost and still sent his Son?
