All together now!
Romans 15:4-7 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. 5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
Ever hear really good harmony? The ones where the musicians’ voices or instruments fit together like they were all meant to be playing their own part but their sounds build on each other into one beautiful chorus? If you have then maybe you’ll notice the same harmonious fit in the scriptures above.
Really good quartets singing in four part harmony use a base (not bass, but it could be) line upon which all the other vocalists build. The interweaving of each person’s respective notes forms a singular voice surpassing the sum of its parts. It’s this systematic arrangement of parallel pieces forming an agreement that overflows spilling out into places that perhaps even the performers never expected. It’s that way with the Holy Spirit.
Endurance, encouragement, acceptance, hope, joy and peace; this is the pleasing and congruent arrangement of parts creating the crescendo of God. This composition and progression created His opus, Jesus, who came to this earth as our savior. The prophet Isaiah said that even the Gentiles would recognize Him and have hope. That’s good news for us and it should become our charge.
It’s our responsibility to keep the music going, to add our voice and our lives to the harmony shown us by Jesus and the Holy Spirt. And as the scripture says: “in one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Everyday Question: What would harmony in your life feel like and how could you begin to get there?
Disharmony in our lives can be a tough and tiring thing. I hope that this helped just a little toward lessening that. If you know someone who needs harmony, please share this with them if you think it might encourage them a little bit.
