Hebrews 10 24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
I’ve always been a head-down, get to my task, take care of myself sort of a guy. Politics (in the strictest definition), committees, focus groups, boards: NOT really my thing. I’ve had to learn how to be encouraging and I’m still not really good at it. One of the three musketeers, I’m not. In today’s society though, I fit in fairly well.
Today, what passes for interaction or a relationship is a little frightening. I have over a hundred Facebook “friends”. A little under a hundred people “follow” me on Twitter. It’s safe to say that I’m not setting any records with these numbers but even with their size, how many of my “friends” do I help or influence? How many could I call and just say, “Let’s go get a cup of coffee”? Perish the thought that I might somehow have an impact on them to the extent that they are motivated toward love and good deeds!
How well do you know your neighbor? I mean literally the people that live next to you? Do you know the people you come in contact with daily well enough to be an asset to them as they see a difficult time approaching? If they were going through a rough patch, would you know it? You can’t be sure if they would reach out to you but ask yourself this, would you reach out to them?
The scripture asks us to consider these things. Maybe we can take comfort that a passage from Hebrews encouraging the people to stick together is still applicable today. Apparently these challenges were around before social media. Separation and isolation or the tendency toward them: not a 21st century conundrum. What a concept.
What in your life moves you away from others? Where does interacting on a personal, deep level with people land on your priority list? How have you tried to improve on this? As a person that sometimes doesn’t do well in this area, I’d sure like to know.
