Lamentations 3: 19-22 “The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end.”

Sometimes our biggest battles are fought in that six or so inches between our ears. We worry and we fuss and we stew about all the things we don’t have or the things we are not. Our thoughts follow us everywhere, they color everything we do and we are literally weighed down by them. We convince ourselves that there is no way we can get out of the mess we currently find ourselves in and maybe we’re right.

Perhaps we should listen to that voice inside our head that says we’re down and out, that we’re not good enough and we never will be. Perhaps this would force us to turn to the one who never leaves us, that truly is our source of hope. Perhaps we need to admit that alone, we just don’t have it.

The scripture says that calling to mind, in that battleground in our melons, that God’s love never ceases and his mercies know no end is the source of our hope. Left to our own thoughts and intellect we are bowed down and our souls are heavy. With the assurance of the love of the Lord, we see a light at the end of that tunnel that our mind would leave dark and infinite. Hope is a powerful thing.

Having faith in the Lord’s never-ending mercy is a powerful weapon as we fight our minds’ tendency to fixate and focus on the bad things. Our free will to bring that power to mind is every bit as possible as the inclination toward negativity and despair. My prayer for you is that in the times of troubled thoughts and heavy spirit you will wield the sword of faith empowered by the love of the Lord and know victory.

Something to Think About:

How much smaller would your worries and troubles be if the Lord physically stood by your side every day? What would it take in your life, to have that feeling that he’s right there with you?
